HGEA Endorses Harry Kim for Hawaii County Mayor

May 29, 2020

The HGEA political action committees and board of directors have approved the endorsement of Harry Kim for Hawaii County Mayor.

Currently the mayor of Hawaii County since 2016, Kim has shown trusted leadership for the past four years, much like he did when he served as Hawaii County Mayor from 2000 to 2008 and as Hawaii County Civil Defense Director for 16 years.

“Harry Kim personifies the Big Island values of hard work and perseverance and cares for Hawaii's working people," said Kalani Motta, Unit 13 member and Hawaii Island Division PAC member. "Much has happened in his current term as mayor, and he has prevailed as a strong, respected leader through all the challenges. Mayor Kim has helped make progress in Kilauea lava recovery projects, creating homes for the homeless and acquiring state and federal funding for Puna. And he has shown composure and diplomacy in his vision for Maunakea to bring scientists and cultural practitioners together and in his approach to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. The people of Hawaii Island need him to remain our mayor.”

Candidates endorsed by HGEA are selected by a member-driven process that starts with political action committees, which are made up of members. Political action committee recommendations are then reviewed by the HGEA board of directors, which is composed of members elected by their respective bargaining units and/or island memberships.
