Banner Health Update: HGEA's phone conference with Banner Health executives

March 06, 2013

On March 5, HGEA Executive Director Randy Perreira had a phone conference with three Arizona-based Banner Health executives and their Honolulu lobbyist, Bob Toyofuku, to clarify HGEA’s questions and concerns with the Banner Health privatization proposal. This is the first time since September 2012 that HGEA has had any kind of meeting with Banner Health.

The Banner Health executives confirmed that after looking at Hawaii’s healthcare market, the Maui region alone would not suit their ability to be successful here, so they need regional scale to include East Hawaii and West Hawaii. In addition, they also acknowledged the need for legislation that enables their entry into the market — without it, they will not stay.

A few particulars were discussed. However, Banner Health stated since they are not in the due diligence process, they are unable to make any commitments about possible terms of the lease agreement.

HGEA requested a formal face-to-face meeting, if and when Banner Health executives return to Hawaii.
